Manifest: A one-page form used by haulers transporting waste that lists MOE identification numbers, type and quantity of liquid waste, the generator it originated from, the transporter that shipped it, and the storage or disposal facility to which it is being shipped. It includes copies for all participants in the shipping process.

Media: Specific environments--air, water, soil--which are the subject of regulatory concern and activities.

Method Detection Limit (MDL): See limit of detection.

Mitigation: Measures taken to reduce adverse impacts on the environment.

Mobile Treatment Unit (MTU):  An MOE approved system used to control the recovery and treatment of petroleum hydrocarbon impacted surface water and/or groundwater. 

Monitoring: Periodic or continuous surveillance or testing to determine the level of compliance with statutory requirements and/or pollutant levels in various media or in humans, plants, and animals.

Monitoring Well:  A well used to obtain water quality samples or measure groundwater levels, to assist in determination of the amounts, types, and distribution of contaminants in the groundwater.

Abbreviations & Acronyms:

BTEX:  Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenze and Xylenes (typical VOC parameters for assessment of hydrocarbon contamination).

CofA:  Certificate of Approval (license issued by MOE for a specific system or process).

DRO:  “Diesel” Range Organic

EPA:  Environmental Protection Act

GAC:  Granular Activated Carbon (i.e. filter media for treatment of hydrocarbon contaminated air or water).

GRO:  “Gasoline” Range Organic

HO:  “Heavy Oil” Range Organic

IAQ:  Interior Air Quality

MDL:  Method Detection Limit.  (i.e. The lowest detectable level of a given parameter, by laboratory analytical instruments).

MOE:  Ministry of the Environment (Ontario)

MTU:  Mobile Treatment Unit (employed by D.L. Services for treatment/control of contaminated ground and surface water).

PHC: Petroleum Hydrocarbons

PID:  Photo-ionization Detector

SVOC:  Semi-Volatile Organic Compound

SWL:  Static Water Level

TPH:  Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons

TSSA:  Technical Standards and Safety Authority

VOC:  Volatile Organic Compound
