Odor Threshold: The minimum odor of a water or air sample that can just be detected after successive dilutions with odorless water. Also called threshold odor.

Off-Site Contamination: Contamination which has migrated from one legally defined property to another, in various media (soil,water or air)

Oil Spill: An accidental or intentional discharge of oil which reaches bodies of water. Can be controlled by chemical dispersion, combustion, mechanical containment, and/or adsorption. Spills from tanks and pipelines can also occur away from water bodies, contaminating the soil, getting into sewer systems and threatening underground water sources.

Organic: 1. Referring to or derived from living organisms. 2. In chemistry, any compound containing carbon.

Overburden: Soils located over the bedrock layer.

BTEX:  Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenze and Xylenes (typical VOC parameters for assessment of hydrocarbon contamination).

CofA:  Certificate of Approval (license issued by MOE for a specific system or process).

DRO:  “Diesel” Range Organic

EPA:  Environmental Protection Act

GAC:  Granular Activated Carbon (i.e. filter media for treatment of hydrocarbon contaminated air or water).

GRO:  “Gasoline” Range Organic

HO:  “Heavy Oil” Range Organic

IAQ:  Interior Air Quality

MDL:  Method Detection Limit.  (i.e. The lowest detectable level of a given parameter, by laboratory analytical instruments).

MOE:  Ministry of the Environment (Ontario)

MTU:  Mobile Treatment Unit (employed by D.L. Services for treatment/control of contaminated ground and surface water).

PHC: Petroleum Hydrocarbons

PID:  Photo-ionization Detector

SVOC:  Semi-Volatile Organic Compound

SWL:  Static Water Level

TPH:  Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons

TSSA:  Technical Standards and Safety Authority

VOC:  Volatile Organic Compound
